BBMP’s e-Khata System Exposes Widespread Tax Evasion, Recovers ₹500 Crore
In a significant administrative breakthrough, the BBMP’s recently launched e-Khata platform—aimed at curbing property fraud and fake documents—has revealed large-scale property tax evasion and significantly improved revenue collection. Launched on October 1, 2023, the system has already helped recover ₹500 crore from defaulters.
Officials found inconsistencies in the documents submitted for final e-Khata approvals, exposing widespread under-reporting of property sizes and misuse of residential tax rates for commercial buildings—issues that thrived under the earlier self-declaration tax model.
So far, over 5.5 lakh final e-Khatas have been issued, and 25 lakh draft versions are available online. Every property in BBMP limits must now be e-Khata registered. Owners must submit documents like Aadhaar, BESCOM numbers, sale deeds, and property images to complete the process.
The verification process has revealed that around 5 lakh properties submitted inaccurate data to pay less tax. BBMP’s cross-checks have proved instrumental in plugging these revenue gaps, and officials expect continued gains in tax collections through stricter enforcement and digital transparency.
